Detection of Pro-Inflammatory IL-8 and IL-12 in Iraqi Women Infected with Trichomoniasis

Abstract: Trichomonas vaginalis is a unicellular flagellated protozoan that resides in female and male genital tract and considered the most prevalent sexually transmitted infectious parasite. The infection rate is relatively equivalent between male and female but trichomoniasis is usually asymptomatic in men. Primary triggering of host inflammatory response to this parasite is not fully understood and most studies address the local reaction of the parasite in female genital tract. In this study, two pro-inflammatory cy… Show more

“…These results also agree with other investigators, including Shaio et al [58] who reported an approximately 55% reduction in the half-life of IL-8 mRNA in monocytes culture treated with membrane T. vaginalis components. However, our results disagree with some other studies, such as that of Kucknoor et al [59] and Ali [60]; they found a higher level of IL-8 in both acute and chronic T. vaginalis infections. T. vaginalis releases extracellular exosome-like vesicles and other factors that play important roles in immunomodulation of some interleukins in response to infection [5].…”

“…The results demonstrate that the infection rates in women are higher than in men, which were 31.7% and 24.2%, respectively (73). Another recent research was done in Baghdad city targeting pro-inflammatory cytokines in the serum of infected women with T. vaginalis, showing that this parasite's IL-8 and IL-12 may alter during infection (74). In Al-Diwaniya city, direct wet mount microscopy and culture were used to detect this parasite in vaginal swabs collected from female pregnant patients.…”

“…Research in New Zealand demonstrated that during a 17month period from March 1985 to July 1986, 30 patients and four staff members were infected with S. aureus or colonized with one strain of MRSA during disease onset at Wellington Hospital. Initially, disinfection occurred through the ICU but Infected or colonized patients were distributed to 14 hospital wards and to five other hospitals in New Zealand, where septicemia contributed to the death of two patients (22,34).…”
