Detection of Trichomonas vaginalis in pregnant women with the InPouch TV culture system

Abstract: Trichomonas vaginalis causes a common genitourinary infection which is frequently asymptomatic. At present, pregnant women are not usually screened for the infection unless they are symptomatic. In the present study, we screened and obtained samples for culture from all pregnant women attending a prenatal clinic with the InPouch TV culture system and compared results with those of standard culture in Diamond's medium and slide wet mount examination. The InPouch TV culture system was as reliable as Diamond's me… Show more

“…1 Research in recent years has increased our understanding of the disease process and its potential sequelae and resulted in improved diagnostic and treatment modalities. [2][3][4][5][6] Nevertheless, adequate diagnosis and treatment of vaginitis in the office setting often is problematic for practitioners. 2,5,[7][8][9] Moreover, the availability of over-the-counter medications for fungal vaginitis has increased the likelihood that women will come to medical attention with partially or inadequately treated infections.…”

“…However, culture of Trichomonas vaginalis by traditional methods is labor intensive, taking up to 5 days to complete and requiring at least three additional wet mount evaluations by technical staff. A pouch culture method for T. vaginalis has been developed, but this technique still requires up to three days of incubation and microscopic evaluation (3). Pap smears have also been used to detect trichomonads from vaginal-cervical smears.…”

“…'7 Some isolates, however, grow poorly or not at all in this medium. 7 In addition, the use of Diamond's medium is labor intensive, requiring daily examination for up to 7 days before the presence or absence of T. vaginalis can be definitively assessed.…”
