Detection of Vibrionaceae in mussels and in their seawater growing area

Abstract: The Vibrio genus, which was isolated more often than the other genera, was particularly prevalent in summer (54.4% of the total number of bacteria isolated during this season), while it was scarce in the winter months.

“…However, Aydin and Soyutemiz (2002), have reported that V. parahaemolyticus was detected in Venus gallina samples collected from Black Sea during the study carried out in 2001. In addition to these reports, Jaksic, Uhitil, Petrak, Bazulic, and Karolyi (2002) and Croci et al (2001) have determined the presence of V. parahaemolyticus off the cost of Italy.…”

“…This species is a member of Aeromonas genus which is known to cause gastro-enteritis in humans. A. hydrophila, which is one of the most common species in the water bodies, besides gastro-enteritis also causes cholera-like infections (Croci et al, 2001;Huss, 1993). Moreover, it is a very resistant microorganism that can survive in food items stored in cold for a period of time without losing its pathogenicity (Diesterweg, 1992).…”

“…Previous studies have, however, shown this type of agar to be unreliable for use in vibrio selection (Bolinches et al, 1988), and different brands of TCBS agar may differ in recovery percentage (Nicholls et al, 1976). The identification of bacteria growing on the TCBS plates revealed the presence of additional species other than those noted in previous studies (Croci et al, 2001) to grow on these plates. It cannot be excluded that virulence genes were not found among the isolated V. parahaemolyticus strains because the bile concentration in the agar used is too low (Pace et al, 1997).…”

“…strains are frequently isolated from different biotopes around the world including seawater and seafood products harvested from aquaculture installation (fishes, shellfishes and molluscs: Baffone et al 2000;Xie et al 2005;Snoussi et al 2006;Lhafi and Kühne 2007;Colakoglu et al 2006;Snoussi et al 2008a). Vibrio alginolyticus, V. parahaemolyticus, V. vulnificus and V. fluvialis are frequently isolated from seawater (Garcia Moreno and Landgarf 1998;Croci et al 2001;Ottaviani et al 2005;Robert Pillot et al 2004;Snoussi et al 2008b) and are always associated with gastrointestinal and extraintestinal troubles related to the consumption of insufficiently cooked seafood or deep contact with contaminated seawater (Sally and Richard 1975;Farina et al 2000; Thompson et al 2004;Couzigou et al 2007).…”
