Determinants of Farm-Level Adoption of Cultural Practices for Banana Xanthomonas Wilt Control in Uganda

Abstract: Understanding the factors influencing farmers' adoption decisions of the disseminated Banana Xanthomonas wilt (BXW) control package is critical for successful management of the disease. This paper analysed the determinants of farmers' decisions to adopt the control package by smallholder banana farmers in Uganda. A binomial Logit model is applied to household survey data collected from 350 households. Results from the study show that household labour availability, technology package attributes such as labour d… Show more

“…Applying all the control options would be the most rapid method in stopping the spread of BXW but this is often too costly [9]. Therefore, here we determine combinations of control measures that would effectively lead to disease eradication at minimum total cost of implementation.…”

“…Jogo et al [9] studied the extent to which cultural control practices have been adopted by farmers and assessed the socioeconomic factors that influence adoption of these practices among smallholder farmers in Uganda. Their results indicate that among the key determinants were labor and perceived effectiveness of the technologies being implemented.…”

“…Management measures include roguing of diseased banana plants, debudding or removal of the male buds using a forked stick, use of clean planting materials and sterilization of farm tools using chemicals or a flame of fire (Tinzaara et al, 2016;Kubiriba & Tushemereirwe, 2014;Jogo et al, 2013). In the absence of a cure (chemical or biological) and unavailability of resistant varieties, the disease continues to spread to new areas.…”
