Determinants of Intercity Air‐Passenger Flows in the “Belt and Road” Region

Abstract: Air-passenger flow, denoting intercity connections, has been a focal point of studies pertaining to urban networks. While most existing studies include only the geoeconomic characteristics of nodes as explanatory variables, this analysis developed a gravity model by incorporating further factors (e.g., cultural disparity and institutional disparity) that might influence air-passenger flows in the “Belt and Road” region. The primary findings are as follows: (1) The cultural and institutional disparities correla… Show more

“…Chinese scholars also conducted research on the spatial structure of regions or urban agglomerations based on flow space. In the early stage, traffic flow data (such as highways, railways, air flights and passengers) [16][17][18] were mainly used to study urban network structure and organization modes, urban centrality, and evolution of urban network levels. Today, big data has become an important source for multi-element flows, such as information [19,20], population [21], logistics [22], and capital [23], as well as a new research direction.…”

“…Expanding foreign cooperation has become an important way to promote the rapid transformation and development of the domestic economy. China has problems such as irrational industrial structure and large regional economic development gap [9][10][11][12]. e proposal of the "Belt and Road" Initiative will help to transfer the excess capacity in the eastern coastal areas to the central and Western regions and overseas so as to optimize the industrial structure and narrow the gap between the rich and the poor.…”
