Determinants of neonatal mortality at neonatal intensive care unit in Northeast Ethiopia: unmatched case-control study

Abstract: Background: Globally, in 2016, about 38% and 3% of all neonatal death were recorded in sub-Saharan Africa and Ethiopia, respectively. In the same year, 47 neonates out of 1000 live births were not surviving in the first 28 days of age in the Amhara region, Ethiopia. Despite the highest burden of neonatal death in the region, specific or the proximate determinants of neonatal death in the neonatal intensive care unit were not well identified.

“… 31 , 35 37 Similarly, neonates born to a mother with premature rupture of membrane (PROM) were more likely to have NNM, a finding supported by previous studies. 10 , 16 , 19 Since association of PROM with preterm birth, respiratory distress syndrome, intravascular hemorrhage, cord prolapse, reduced amniotic fluid volume, chorioamnionitis, neonatal sepsis, and birth asphyxia was reported, 38 40 this finding was expected. Similarly, obstructed labor 14 , 16 , 19 and non-vertex presentation were associated with NNM.…”

“…Being born preterm increases risk of dying because of immature organs [6,7]. Hyaline membrane disease (HMD) is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in preterm newborn babies [8][9][10][11][12], 45% of cause of death in Ethiopia [13], 46.9% in Nigeria [14], 12.8% in Poland [15]. In addition, the burden of NRDS among neonates reported as 52.9% of total admission in Egypt [16], 26.2% in Nigeria [14], 34.7% in Iraq [17], 57% in north India [18], 23.5% in nepal [19],11.9% in Jimma [20].…”
