It has been observed that income inequality is an economic element that may impede a nation's economic development. In general, Indonesia's Gini ratio has remained low for nearly a decade, although one region, Yogyakarta Province, unexpectedly exceeds the national average. The provincial government of Yogyakarta must focus more on reducing income inequality. Therefore, this study employs the Poverty-Growth-Inequality Triangle model approach to investigate the complexity of income inequality in Yogyakarta Province. The data is collected from five cities in Yogyakarta Province from 2010 to 2021. For the quantitative study, a Simultaneous Equation Model analysis with three iterations of least squares is performed. The results indicate that there is no causal relationship between income inequality and economic growth or poverty. According to the model of income inequality, education and the district minimum wage have a significant impact on income inequality. Therefore, local governments are advocated to evaluate policies aimed at reducing income inequality through education system reform, equity in district minimum wage and economic growth, and efficiency in the utilization of income inequality-related funds.

Does Economic Growth Mediate Investment, Inflation, and Human Development Investment on Poverty in Indonesia?

Poverty is a classic yet interesting topic of discussion because the problem of poverty has not been solved. This study analyzed the role of economic growth in mediating the effects of investment, inflation, and Human Development Investment (HDI) on poverty in Indonesia. Using the multiple regression method of path analysis and the data from 32 provinces in Indonesia, the results showed that investment had a positive effect on economic growth and poverty, but inflation had no effect on economic growth and poverty while HDI had a positive effect on economic growth but a negative effect on poverty. Economic growth mediated the effect of investment and HDI, but not the effect of inflation on poverty. Hence, it can be said that it is not enough for the government to only prioritize economic growth, optimal investment, a higher level of HDI, and a stable inflation rate. They must also strive to reduce inequality between regions, support labour-intensive, well-targeted and direct investments in the real sector, and involve all stakeholders to achieve an effective and efficient national development in the context of poverty reduction.How to Cite:Fitriady, A., Silvia, V., & Suriani. This study aims to analyze the simultaneous and partial effects of population and economic factors on poverty in Banten Province for the 2011-2019 period. Population factors include population growth rate, population density, and sex ratio. Meanwhile, economic factors cover the open unemployment rate, HDI, and GRDP. With secondary data from the publication page of Statistics Indonesia in Banten Province, this research was conducted using a descriptive quantitative approach. To analyze the data, the study used panel data regression analysis. The econometric model was estimated using the Ridge Regression model to overcome the multicollinearity problem between variables in the study. The statistical test results showed that the variables of population growth rate, open unemployment rate, sex ratio, human development index, and GRDP were reported to simultaneously and significantly affect poverty in Banten Province during 2011-2019. Partially, several variables, such as population growth rate, open unemployment rate, and HDI each had a significant negative effect on poverty. Interestingly, other variables, like the sex ratio, had a significant positive effect on poverty. The variables of population density and Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) did not affect poverty. This study indicated that to reduce poverty, the Banten Provincial government should focus on improving the quality of human resources. They should improve health, education, skills, and expertise. Thus, people can have the competence to compete and obtain better jobs, which in turn can increase their income and welfare. In this way, they are expected to get out of the poverty cycle.
