The slow city concept is associated with great care for the protection of the natural environment and the use of renewable energy sources. Thus, the study aimed to discuss the potential of the slow city model and the actual role of Cittaslow local governments in deploying renewable energy, based on the case study of the Polish Cittaslow Network. To achieve this aim, we carried out qualitative and quantitative data analyses, based on literature review and data for all 35 Polish Cittaslow municipalities, retrieved from: (i) development strategies (ii) a survey (iii) the Local Data Bank of Statistics Poland, (iv) the Quality of Life Synthetic Index (QLI). To process the data, we applied descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk test, the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test, and the Spearman’s rank test. Findings showed that the support for renewable energy deployment was not at a high level and did not correlate with the goals set in the Cittaslow development strategies. This was the result of a cumulation of pressing social and economic problems, which the local authorities in Poland are legally obliged to solve, while the implementation of renewable energy is not obligatory. The QLI for these municipalities was low and renewable energy was not a significant element in improving the quality of life of citizens.

Revitalization of Public Spaces in Cittaslow Towns: Recent Urban Redevelopment in Central Europe

Revitalization of cities varies depending on the scale of a city, type of challenges, and the socio-environmental context in each case. While revitalization projects carried out in globally known cities are well described, there is still a gap in characterizing revitalization processes that aim to improve quality of life in smaller units like medium-sized towns. This paper fills this gap by the insight from 82 revitalization projects implemented in 14 towns of Warmia and Mazury region (Poland) which are associated in the Cittaslow movement. The study combines a quantitative assessment of statistical data describing these projects with their qualitative evaluation based on interviews with local experts. The results of conducted analyses show that socio-economic development plays a major role as, despite projects which directly refer to the social domain, social elements were found also in projects initially categorized as those targeted to architectural and spatial domains. On the other hand, the authors observed that environmental and ecological as well as cultural issues are treated unevenly or marginally in projects compared to social ones. Interviews with experts show that the least importance was assigned to cultural and historical domain. The obtained results might constitute important knowledge to understand the background of current revitalization processes outside of global metropolises to improve future mechanisms supporting urban renewal.

Przedmiotem badań w pracy jest organizacja miejskiej przestrzeni rekreacyjnej na potrzeby rozwoju plenerowej rekreacji twórczej. Poddane analizie zostały zorganizowane przez różnorodne podmioty aktywności w czasie wolnym, o charakterze twórczym, w otwartej przestrzeni Łodzi. Jednocześnie analizie poddano rolę organizacji łódzkiej przestrzeni rekreacyjnej dla rozwoju wskazanych aktywności. Poszukiwano odpowiedzi na pytanie główne: w jaki sposób organizować przestrzeń rekreacyjną miasta na potrzeby rozwoju plenerowej rekreacji twórczej? Postępowanie badawcze zawierało: wywiady eksperckie, kwerenda wydarzeń z zakresu plenerowej rekreacji twórczej w Łodzi w 2019 roku, sondażowe badanie uczestników plenerowej rekreacji twórczej, indywidualne wywiady swobodne z organizatorami badanych wydarzeń w Łodzi, etnograficzne badanie wizualne z wybranymi organizatorami, uzupełnione wywiadami interpretacyjnymi wskazanych przez respondentów zdjęć nt. „moich twórczych miejsc”. Analiza zebranych wyników pozwoliła na poszerzenie dyskusji nad zrozumieniem i funkcją rekreacji w badaniach geograficznych, przy wykorzystaniu psychopedagogicznych teorii twórczości w aspekcie jej zewnętrznych uwarunkowań. Elementy organizacji miejskiej przestrzeni rekreacyjnej odniesiono do cech miasta kreatywnego, środowiska kreatogennego oraz stymulatorów i inhibitorów twórczości. Dzięki temu wyodrębniono najważniejsze determinanty rozwoju plenerowej rekreacji twórczej. Rekreacja tym samym okazała się zjawiskiem wymagającym interdyscyplinarnych studiów. Ważne jest aktualizowanie znaczenia pojęcia, dostosowywanie jego występowania oraz form do zmieniających się uwarunkowań zewnętrznych.
