Determinants of the Use of Four Categories of Complementary and Alternative Medicine

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to assess the social and health determinants of the use of four separate and distinct categories of complementary and alternative medical therapies: biologically based, mind-body, manipulative, and whole CAM medical systems. The behavioral model of health services use, which holds that health service use is a function of predisposing, enabling, and need characteristics, is used as the theoretical framework for linking specific determinants with the four categories of CAM use. “…In general, patients look for therapies with the potential to improve their quality of life or showing fewer side-effects. As regards the prevalence of CAM use, it has to be considered that in contrast to this, CAM was more often used in order to prevent illness or to strengthen the immune system, rather than treatment of illness (18)(19)(20). Often patients are not aware of the potential risks of CAM treatment.…”

“…The utilization of health services by chronic pain patients depends on multiple need factors, including physical factors such as pain-related symptoms (severity and duration), preexisting medical conditions (co-morbidities and previous operations), functional capacity, and mental health (depressive symptoms). This model has been successfully used in the study of CAM [8].…”

“…30 Analysis of the US National Health Interview Survey (n=31,044) also identified headache as one of the most common health problems experienced by CAM users. 31 While these studies highlight a relationship between CAM use and headache disorders, they provided little information on the patterns of and motivations for CAM use among people with headache and migraine.Although evidence of CAM use for headache and migraine is emerging, there has been no review or synthesis of CAM user characteristics, perceptions or motivations amongst headache and migraine sufferers. Such a review is essential in order to provide important insights for health practitioners and policymakers with regards to the safety and continuity of care for patients -an issue pronounced by the fact that CAM users appear not to disclose such use to their conventional doctors, Previous studies reveal that a lack of GP interest in their patients' use of CAM or the patients' perception that CAM use is not an important issue that should be raised with their doctor are the two major factors contributing to nondisclosure of CAM.…”
