The stand improvement and regeneration treatments carried out by the Department of Fisheries and the Environment of Canada at Dudswell Experimental Forest in cooperation with Domtar Ltd. are producing results after 15 years of observations. These are directly applicable to management for timber, recreation, wildlife, and water in Quebec hardwood stands dominated by sugar maple, beech, yellow birch, or red maple. Research results indicate marked advantages, in stands of good quality hardwoods, of thinnings taking 30 to 40°/0 of the total volume and of group or strip selection cutting, and, in stands of poor quality hardwoods, of strip clear cutting. Site preparation and artificial regeneration are not required to obtain a stand of a quality at least equal to that of the original stand.

Apparent Defect in Second-Growth Tolerant Hardwood Stands in Quebec

high potential value, being close to industrial centers and having high potential productivity, but management of these forests is not intensive. Preliminary studies were made of the quantity and quality of hardwood regeneration after cutting. This paper deals with defect in sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.), yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britt.) and beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.) in secondgrowth hardwood stands in the Middle Ottawa section ( L 4c) (Rowe, 1959). The data were obtained concurrently with those of a regeneration and stand development study1 (Winget, 1968). MethodsStands selected for sompling had to be reasonably homogeneous, at least 25 acres in area, have at least 25% of stems in tolerant hardwood species and known cutting histories. The 139 stands sampled were stratified into the following broad site classes: 1 ) Sites with impeded drainage in valley bottoms or at the bases of slopes; alluvial or till soils. 2) Moderately well-drained middle and lower slopes; deep till soils. 3) Well-drained middle and upper slopes; moderately deep till soils with some rock ledge. 4 ) Very well-drained upper slopes; shallow till soils and considerable rock ledge. 5 ) Excessively-drained upper slopes and hilltops with very thin till soils and much rock ledge. A diameter-limit cut, where limits were 43 cm for yellow birch and 27 cm for other species, resulted in the harvesting of 56% of the merchantable volume of the whole stand. Ten years after this treatment, excellent regeneration was established; yellow birch accounted for 53% of this regeneration, which is nearly double that found in untreated stands; it had begun to have a slower development under forest cover. The merchantable volume increment of the residual stand has been slow during the ten years after the cut, being almost entirely produced by low-grade trees so that the residual stand looks like the original one where quality will continue to decrease.
