Determination of Aflatoxins in Agricultural Products: Use of Aqueous Acetone for Extraction

Abstract: An analytical procedure originally developed for the determination of aflatoxins in cottonseed products has been modified for application to many agricultural materials. Aflatoxins are rapidly extracted free of lipid contamination with 70% acetone. Many interfering pigments are removed from the crude extract by precipitation as insoluble lead derivatives, transfer of aflatoxins into chloroform, and further purification of the chloroform extract with silica gel.
