Determination of Anaerobic Capacity - Reliability and Validity of Sprint Running Tests

Abstract: PURPOSE: A number of physiological diagnostics were developed. However, the timeline-related diagnostics of maximal anaerobic glycolytic capacity remain unclear. The objective of this study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of a sprint running test to assess the anaerobic capacity.METHODS: The study was divided into three parts. Sixty-one male (24±4 years, 181.0±4.3 cm; 78.5±5.9 kg) and twelve female (25±3 years, 167.0±0.6 cm, 60.4±5.7 kg) sports students participated in this study. Twenty-five subj… Show more

“…V La max has already been determined by using all-out exercise tests in cycling [5,9,13,23], handcycling [6,23], running [7,24] and canoe polo [25]. However, the effect of exercise modality on V La max has purely been examined in a within-participant design.…”

“…However, given that glycolysis increasingly inhibits its key enzyme phosphofructokinase (due to a concomitant reduction intracellular pH) [59], applying exercises beyond 15 s would lead to premature fatigue and, as such, impede to determine the maximal rate of glycolysis. This phenomenon has been demonstrated and described in recent investigation [60] and in a narrative review [15]. Since recent research indicates that ċLa max is sport-specific as it does not correlate between cycling and running [21], the application of a short all-out test in running seems to be applicable here.…”
