“…This profile is located inside the urban area and these values are related to anthropogenic activities/urban pollution, which is consistent with the observations of e.g. Blaha et al (2008). The peak for Zn in this profile is related to the road traffic (Zn is a typical pollutant by traffic emission (Reimann and Caritat, 1998): this profile is located near a road with high traffic density.…”

“…The magnetic properties of soils proved to be suitable parameters, as they reflect the various degrees of contamination due to human activities and allow us to detect the area most affected by pollution. The measurement of magnetic properties in samples taken in soil profiles enables: 1) acquisition of information about the boundary depth between polluted soil and clean soil (Blaha et al, 2008), 2) discrimination between anthropogenic and lithogenic contributions (Fialová et al, 2006;Magiera et al, 2006), 3) discovery of the underlying parent material's influence on the magnetic signal (Hanesch and Scholger, 2005), 4) understanding of the development of pedogenic processes (Jordanova et al, 2010;Maher et al, 2002) and 5) attainment of climate reconstructions (Alekseeva et al, 2007;Maher et al, 2002). In the present study, data from 6 soil profiles, which formed on diverse parent material and in different environments (rural/urban), are analysed.…”

“…Many previous studies have suggested that pollutant inputs, especially heavy metal pollution, usually accompany enhanced magnetism in the topsoil in urban and industrial areas (Gautam et al, 2004;Wang and Qin, 2005;Blaha et al, 2008;Matysek et al, 2008). In order to study the relation between soil magnetic properties and anthropogenic emission, the industrial density for each administrative district, which was calculated as gross industrial output value (in unit of million RMB Yuan, from 2001 to 2010) normalized by corresponding area (Statistics Bureau of Guangdong Province, Guangdong Survey Office of National Bureau of Statistics, 2002Statistics, -2011, is illustrated in Fig.…”
