Phthalates and bisphenol chemicals have been widely used globally in packaging materials and consumer products for several decades. These highly functional chemicals have become a concern due to their toxicity (i.e., endocrine/hormone modulators) and ability to migrate from food contact materials (FCMs) into food matrices and the environment resulting in human and environmental health risks. FCMs, composed of postconsumer materials, are particularly high risk for containing these compounds. The evaluation of postconsumer recycled feedstocks in FCMs is compulsory and selection of an appropriate detection method to comply with applicable regulations is necessary to evaluate human and environmental safety. Numerous regulations have been proposed and passed globally for both compound classes that are recognized as priority pollutants by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the European Union. Several brand owners and retailers have also released their own “restricted substance lists” due to the mounting consumer and regulatory concerns. This review article has two goals: (1) discuss the utilization, toxicology, human exposure routes, and occurrence levels of phthalates and bisphenols in FCMs and associated legislation in various countries and (2) discuss critical understanding and updates for detection/quantification techniques. Current techniques discussed include extraction and sample preparation methods (solid‐phase microextraction [SPME], headspace SPME, Soxhlet procedure, ultrasound‐assisted extraction), chromatographic techniques (gas, liquid, detectors), and environmental/blank considerations for quantification. This review complements a previous review of phthalates in foods from 2009 by discussing phthalate and bisphenol characteristics, analytical methods of determining concentrations in packaging materials, and their influence on the migration potential into food.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial chemical applied in making polycarbonate and epoxy resin that commonly used as food containers, beverage cans and baby bottles. BPA could be discharged into the environment from industrial waste and sewage treatment plant which then causing adverse effects to aquatic organism and consumers. Micro-solid phase extraction (µ-SPE) using C 18-impregnated cellulose triacetate (C 18-CTA) composite film as the adsorbent films coupled with high performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection (HPLC-FD) has been developed for the determination of BPA in environmental water and soft drink samples. Under the optimum extraction conditions, the method showed excellent linearity in the range of 0.1 to 500 ppb with correlation coefficient, r = 0.992. This method provided ultra-trace detection limit of 0.004 ppb, trace quantification limit of 0.01 ppb and acceptable relative recovery average in the range of 80.9 to 102.6% with relative standard deviation ≤ 9.7%. The proposed microextraction method is simple, rapid and eco-friendly as it consumes less amount of nonhazardous organic solvent.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is widely used in consumer products such as plastic bottles and food containers. It has become a ubiquitous environmental contaminant and poses a serious risk to human health. A rapid, sensitive, and highthroughput method for detecting BPA is therefore desirable. Herein, a donor/acceptor nanoparticle pair-based singlet oxygen channeling chemiluminescence homogenous immunoassay is developed for the determination of BPA. The donor nanoparticles were modified with phthalocyanine as a photosensitizer and were then coated with streptavidin. The acceptor nanoparticles were doped with thioxene derivatives and Eu(III) as a chemiluminescence emitter and then coated with anti-BPA antibody. Under light irradiation, oxygen near the donor surface transforms to singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), which migrates to the acceptor and reacts with it, generating luminescence. Because 1 O 2 has a very short lifetime, luminescence is generated only when the donor and acceptor are in close proximity. This occurs when they are brought together by the antigen/antibody and streptavidin/biotin reaction. Based on this singlet oxygen channeling mechanism, a competitive homogenous chemiluminescence immunoassay for BPA was developed on 384 microplates. The assay exhibited linear detection over the range 10-1000 ng/mL and a limit of detection of 2.9 ng/mL. The intra-and inter-assay precisions were both below 5.1 %. The average recoveries of three spiked samples in tap and river water samples were in the range 95.5-121.0 %, in agreement with values obtained using highperformance liquid chromatography. The homogeneous assay is rapid, low cost, sensitive, and allows high-throughput, so is well suited for screening large numbers of environmental samples.
