Experimental liver injury was induced to test rats with a daily injection of thioacetamide (ThAA). The doses used for intraperitoneal administrations were 50 mg/kg body weight. The loss of body weight in the 3-week test period was 15%. In the liver there was seen progressive changes which displayed cell necrosis and regeneration. The influence of ThAA on rat blood and serum was checked using standard biochemical assays consisting of the percentage of blood obtainable and the serum/blood ratio and analysis of serum alanine transferase, serum alkaline phosphatase, serum creatinine, and hydroxyproline in the acute, subacute, chronic, and necrotic stage of liver injury. With ThAA injections, the stimulated rate of glycosaminoglycan synthesis had its association to the serum calcium content. It decreased continuously as function of traumatization time. In the 3-week test period, histological findings show in the alveolar bone, around the teeth, when under occlusal stress and ThAA traumatization, the distinct decrease in osteoblastic activity and less osteoids indicating thus the decreased formation of new bone. Conspicuous osteoclastic resorption was also seen in the same area.

SummaryThe effects of oleuropein, a phenolic compound in extra virgin olive oil (EVolive oil), on triglyceride metabolism were investigated by measuring the degree of thermogenesis in interscapular brown adipose tissue (IBAT), and noradrenaline and adrenaline secretions in rats. In Experiment 1, rats were given a high-fat diet (control diet) with the oleuropein supplementation of 1, 2 or 4 mg/kg of diet (0.1, 0.2 or 0.4% oleuropein diet, respectively). After 28 d of feeding, body weight, perirenal adipose tissue, epididymal fat pad, and plasma triglyceride, free fatty acid and total cholesterol concentrations were reduced by the 0.1, 0.2 or 0.4% oleuropein diet and were significantly lowest in rats fed the 0.4% oleuropein diet, as compared with those of rats fed with the control diet. The content of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) in IBAT and urinary noradrenaline and adrenaline excretions were significantly higher in rats fed the 0.1 or 0.2% oleuropein diet, as compared with those of rats fed with the control diet, although there were no significant differences in rats fed the 0.4% oleuropein diet. In Experiment 2, the effects of oleuropein on noradrenaline and adrenaline secretion were evaluated. The intravenous administration of oleuropein and oleuropein aglycone significantly increased plasma noradrenaline and adrenaline concentrations. Furthermore, oleuropein aglycone induced the secretions of noradrenaline and adrenaline about ten fold more potently than oleuropein. These results suggest that the phenolic compound oleuropein in EV-olive oil enhances thermogenesis by increasing the UCP1 content in IBAT and noradrenaline and adrenaline secretions in rats.

Resumo Foram comparados o estado nutricional e parâmetros do metabolismo do ferro de adultos HIV-positivos, com ou sem resposta de fase aguda (RFA). Adultos HIV-positivos (n = 29) submeteram-se a antropometria, recordatório alimentar e determinação sérica de albumina, proteína C reativa (PCR), ferritina e capacidade total de ligação do ferro (CTLF), além de creatinina urinária. Infecção mais PCR > 7mg/dl foram critérios de positividade da RFA. Índice de massa corporal (IMC < 18,5kg/m 2 ) e índice creatinina-altura (ICA < 70%) definiram subnutrição. Subnutrição (77,8 vs 40%) e tuberculose pulmonar (44,4 vs 9,5%) foram mais freqüentes nos pacientes RFA-positivos, que também apresentaram menores níveis de albumina (3,7 ± 0,9 vs 4,3 ± 0,9g/dl), CTLF (165,8 ± 110,7 vs 265,9 ± 74,6mg/dl) e hemoglobina (10,5± 1,8 vs 12,6 ± 2,3g/dl). A ingestão de ferro foi adequada e similar entre RFA-positivos e RFA-negativos, o mesmo ocorrendo, respectivamente, quanto à ferritina sérica (mediana; variação, 568; 45,3-1814 vs 246; 18,4-1577ng/ml). Pacientes HIV-positivos com resposta de fase aguda são nutricionalmente mais comprometidos e têm anemia que parece não depender da ingestão recente de ferro. Palavras-chaves: Resposta de fase aguda. Subnutrição protéico-energética.Abstract Nutritional status and some iron metabolism parameters of acute phase response (APR) positive and APR-negative AIDS patients were studied. Twenty-nine AIDS patients were submitted to 24h food intake recall, anthropometry, and albumin, C-reactive protein (CRP), hemoglobin, ferritin, and total iron binding capacity (TIBC) measurements. Infection plus serum CRP > 7mg/dl were criteria for APR presence. Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) was ascertained by body mass index (BMI) lower than 18.5kg/m 2 and height-creatinine index (HCI < 70%). PEM (77.8 vs 40%) and pulmonary tuberculosis (44.4 vs 9.5%) were more frequent in APR-positive patients, which also had lower serum albumin (3.7 ± 0.9 vs 4.3 ± 0.9g/dl), TIBC (165.8 ± 110.7 vs 265.9 ± 74.6mg/dl) and blood hemoglobin (10.5 ± 1.8 vs 12.6 ± 2.3g/dl). Iron intake was similar between groups; however, serum ferritin levels (median, range) were higher among APR-positive (568, 45.3-1814 vs 246, 18.4-1577ng/ml) patients. HIV-positive adults with systemic response to invading pathogens showed worse nutritional status than those APR-negative. In APR-positive AIDS patients, anemia appears to be unrelated to recent iron intake.
