Determination of Heavy Metals in Soil and Plants along Major Road in Hong Local Government Area, Adamawa State, Nigeria

Abstract: Heavy metal concentration in roadside soil and plants are increasingly becoming of health concern. This work determined the concentration of selected heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Zn, Cr, Fe, Mg, Mn, Co, Ni and Cu) in roadside soils and plants samples from selected sites (Plaifu, Shiwa, Fadama-rake and Damdrai) along major road in Hong. Soil samples were taken 10 m, 20 m and 30 m away from the edge of the road at the  depth of 0-10 cm, 10-20 cm and 20-30 cm. Plant samples were randomly collected within the vicinity wh… Show more

“…Steroids were also found, albeit at a lower level (0.22 mg/ 100 g) than the 0.42 mg/100 g observed for C. auranifolia seed (W illiams et al, 2020). As arrow poisons or heart medications, steroids are phytoconstituents that have been shown to have therapeutic uses (Timothy, 2018). A tiny quantity of the steroid component in the ELM may help animals with wasting disease and osteoporosis retain nitrogen (Maurya et al, 2008;Madziga and Sandabe, 2010).…”

“…Heavy metal concentrations decreased with increasing distance from the roadside and soil depth. The concentration of heavy metals Zn, Mn, Cu and Mg in plants compared to the soil was found to be more significant than 1 [47]. A type of grass Stenotaphrum sp., on the roadside and soil was analysed for the total content of heavy metals Cd, Pb, Zn, Cr, Fe, Mg, Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu in plants and soil.…”

“…The sources of Cu include liver, whole grains, molasses, legumes, nuts, shellfish and other seafood. Cu deficiency is associated with cardiac hypertrophy and sudden cardiac failure [15].…”

“…Although the seed has a very low peroxides value and high iodine value, it cannot be recommended for consumption because of the low yield and its repulsive odours. The seed, however, can serve as a cheap source of protein, as well as micronutrients supplement in both man and animal [2,15].…”
