Determination of Metal Ions in Water, Soil, and Sediment by Capillary Electrophoresis

Abstract: The determination of metal ions in the environmental samples by capillary electrophoresis is an important area for the environmental chemists. The determination of metal ions in water, soil and sediment samples by capillary electrophoresis is reviewed. Various aspects of analysis such as sample pre-treatment, metal ion complexation, detection, choice of visualizing agents, detection limit and choice of electrolytes have been discussed. Suggestions to improve the application of CE for metal ions analysis are gi… Show more

“…The presence of Fe 3+ in biological systems has to be efficiently monitored as both its deficiency and overloading can induce various biological disorders, 51,52 hence there is on-going requirement for sensitive sensing strategies for detection of iron. 53 While analytical techniques such as capillary electrophoresis, 54 electrochemical methods, 55 atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) 56 and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), 57 are available for the detection of metal ions, they possess limitations including complicated processing, expensive instruments and time-consuming, complicated operation. 58,59 Photoluminescence based sensing methods 60,61 allow for rapid testing and analysis, possess high sensitivity due to the low signal backgrounds and excellent signal/noise ratios inherent to this method, and are relatively simple and cost effective to carry out.…”

“…The growing practical utility of CE involving a range of specific samples, such as various environmental matrices [45][46][47][48], industrial samples [45,46], biological materials, food and beverages [46], and other applications, was the subject of respective recent reviews. Specifically, Paull and King [45] summarized in table format work both exploring and improving the quantitative aspects of the CE of inorganic anions.…”
