Microsite conditions influence plant development and resource allocation of Dactylis glomerata L. (orchardgrass), a traditional pasture species with potential as an understory crop in woodlots. A field experiment was conducted to determine how open (O), shaded woodland (W) and open-to-shaded woodland transition zone (E O , E W ) microsites influenced the quantity and distribution of nonstructural carbohydrate (TNC) and crude protein (CP) among plant parts of defoliated orchardgrass. Plants established in spring (SP) or late summer (LS) were clipped each time mean sward height reached 20 cm.Microsite conditions influenced nutritive value of herbage. Nutritive value was acceptable when not more than 45-50% light attenuation (as a function of shading by nearby trees) occurred relative to open pasture. Twice as much TNC accumulated in stembases of LS compared to SP plants. Concentrations of TNC were least in plants growing at W, regardless of planting time. Stembase TNC depletion occurred in SP plants, regardless of microsite, and LS plants growing at W. CP concentrations were greater in herbage from W compared to O sites, suggesting the N needs of the plant were met with minimal fertilizer N inputs. The ratio of C:N and thus herbage energy expressed as total digestible nutrients (TDN), relative to CP declined as shade increased. Increased protein content is offset by lower fiber, lower nonstructural carbohydrate and the possibility of reduced preference by grazers. Nutritive value is improved by modest amounts of shade relative to plants growing in full sunlight, and allowing cool temperate origin grasses to vernalize is beneficial in terms of productivity, nutritive value, and persistence.

Animal manure and urine deposition can cause localized patches of high ionic strength (IS) soil in pastures, influencing plant production, nutritive value and sward composition. Chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) appears to thrive in high‐nutrient input situations, but no information is available on chicory response to increasing IS. In a greenhouse experiment, we evaluated the effect of rhizosphere ionic strength (0.9, 4.0, 8.0 and 12.0 dS m−1) on productivity and nutritive value of chicory. Dry matter production decreased linearly as IS increased. Shoot concentrations for Ca, Na and Cl increased as IS increased. All mineral concentrations, except Cu, were substantially higher than or equal to the highest concentrations reported for forages. At all IS, nitrate‐N and K exceeded maximum recommendation for ruminant diets. The sodium level could be high enough to reduce dry matter intake at the highest IS level. Crude protein and energy estimates indicate chicory would support production levels equivalent to those of other high‐quality forages. In vitro organic matter disappearance increased as IS increased. Chicory as a component of a forage mixture could help stabilize forage yield in pastures and also shows promise for use as a nutrient mop in feedlot areas, where excess soil nutrients are a problem.

This study was carried out to determine the current levels of nitrates in baby foods marketed in Lisbon, Portugal to estimate the toxicological risk associated with their intake. The nitrate content was determined in bottled baby foods of four varieties: vegetable-based foods, meat-based foods, fish-based foods, and fruit-based foods. A total of 39 samples were analyzed over the period 2010-2011. Average and median levels of nitrate in baby foods were lower than the maximum limits established by European Union legislation (200 mg kg −1 ). Median nitrate values in baby foods were 61, 30, 39, and 15 mg kg −1 w/w for vegetable-based baby foods, meat-based baby foods, fish-based baby foods, and fruit-based baby foods, respectively. The estimated nitrate daily intake through bottled baby foods for infants indicate that individually, these foods are not able to induce nitrate toxicity in the children population.
