“…The proposed method is also useful for the measurement of both soluble and membrane bound catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) activities with norepinephrine, measuring the resulting product, normetanephrine, and obtaining information on the role of metabolism of CAs in rat tissues [49]. Moreover, by reducing nitroCAs in a reducer column integrated in the system, increasing in this way the CL intensity for these compounds, the determination of nitronorepinephrine, nitroepinephrine, and nitrodopamine in rat brain has also been reported [50]. Some of the methods developed by this group have been compiled in a review [51].…”

“…It is suggested that the reaction follows a chemically initiated electron exchange luminescence (CIEEL) mechanism by means of a high energy-rich intermediate 1,2-dioxetanedione, which forms a charge transfer complex with the energy-accepting fluorophore by donating one electron to the intermediate. This electron transferred back to the fluorophore, which becomes electronically excited and afterwards emits light [23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31].…”

“…As this review specifically focuses on the bioanalytical applications of HPLC-POCL detection, it is worth mentioning that the aforementioned methods significantly contributed to the study of the role of catecholamines [50] and their metabolites [51][52][53] in blood pressure regulation. Nitrocatecholamines, which are obtained from catecholamines in the presence of nitric oxide, in rat brain were determined by HPLC-POCL detection [54,55]. Since nitrocatecholamines have a strong electron-withdrawing nitro group attached to the catechol moiety and nitro aromatic compounds are known to exhibit weak luminescence, reduction of nitrocatecholamines was carried out on a reducing column, the use of which increased the sensitivity of detection by 45-172%.…”
