Abstract:A study on sulfur circulation in sediments was carried out in dam reservoirs (Sulejów, Siemianówka, Turawa) with di erent hydrological and age characteristics as well as with a di erent level of sediment accumulation and organic matter content. Di erences in the isotopic composition of SO − in the water column and small variations in the concentration of this ion were observed in the Turawa reservoir. The investigations did not show vertical variation in the watercolumn concentrations and isotopic composition. This is due to the small depths of the reservoir and mixing of water. A part of sulfate sulfur from the water column is reduced by incorporating it into cell structures, while a part of it is deposited in the sediment. The study revealed a small exchange of SO − between the water column and the sediment. Depending on the season of the year and the sediment sampling site, biogeochemical transformations of sulfur species are observed. A signi cant variation in the biogeochemical processes was found between the Siemianówka and Sulejów reservoirs, both in the concentrations and in the isotopic composition of particular sulfur species. This primarily results from the di erent characteristics of either of these reservoirs ( ows, sedimentation, and material discharge to the lake). The main source of sulfur supplied to the sediments in the Siemianówka reservoir is organic sulfur contained in organic matter deposited at the bottom. In the sediment, organic sulfur is bacterially oxidized and xed as SO − .This is manifested in a substantial enrichment of sulfate in S. The presence of polysul des was found in both reservoirs, but a distinct depletion of δ S(S − ) in the light sulfur isotope was observed in the Siemianówka reservoir. In a part of the Sulejów reservoir, polysul des are oxidized to SO − ,probably at the sediment/water interface.

An analytical scheme suitable for boreal acid sulphate (AS) soils and sediments was developed on the basis of existing methods. The presented procedure can be used to quantify and discriminate among acid volatile sulphide, cold chromium reducible sulphur, hot chromium reducible sulphur, elemental sulphur, sulphate sulphur, organic sulphur, total reducible sulphur and total sulphur. The sulphur fractions are recovered as either Ag 2 S or BaSO 4 precipitates and can further be used for isotope analysis.Overlaps between sulphur species are common during speciation, and must be minimized. Some of these overlaps are caused by poor sampling and storage, inappropriate conditions during the distillation, or natural variations in the sample (e.g. Fe 3+ interference and grain size). The procedural impact was determined by conducting tests on both artificial and natural samples containing one or several sulphur species. The method is applied on reduced sediment from an AS soil locality (Överpurmo) and a brackish lake (Larsmo Lake) in western Finland and the results, including S-isotopes, are discussed.

RationaleSulfur isotopes have been widely used to solve some key scientific questions, especially in the last two decades with advanced instruments and analytical schemes. Different sulfur speciation and multiple isotopes analyzed in laboratories worldwide and in situ microanalysis have also been reported in many articles. However, methods of sampling to measurements are multifarious, and occasionally some inaccuracies are present in published papers. Vague methods may mislead newcomers to the field, puzzle readers, or lead to incorrect data‐based correlations.MethodsWe have reviewed multiple methods on sulfur isotopic analyses from the perspectives of sampling, laboratory work, and instrumental analysis in order to help reduce operational inhomogeneity and ensure the fidelity of sulfur isotopic data. We do not deem our proposed solutions as the ultimate standard methods but as a lead‐in to the overall introduction and summary of the current methods used.ResultsIt has been shown that external contamination and transformation of different sulfur species should be avoided during the sampling, pretreatment, storage, and chemical treatment processes. Conversion rates and sulfur isotopic fractionations during sulfur extraction, purification, and conversion processes must be verified by researchers using standard or known samples. The unification of absence of isotopic fractionation is needed during all steps, and long‐term monitoring of standard samples is recommended.ConclusionThis review compiles more details on different methods in sampling, laboratory operation, and measurement of sulfur isotopes, which is beneficial for researchers' better practice in laboratories. Microanalyses and molecular studies are the frontier techniques that compare the bulk sample with the elemental analysis/continuous flow–gas source stable isotope ratio mass spectrometry method, but the latter is widely used. The development of sulfur isotopic measurements will lead to the innovation in scientific issues with sulfur proxies.
