Determination of rubella virus‐specific cell‐mediated immunity using IFNγ‐ELISpot

Abstract: Immunity to rubella virus (RV) is conventionally determined by measuring specific immunoglobulin G (IgG). However, several individuals may be considered immune despite undetectable antibody levels. In the present study RV-specific interferon-gamma (IFN gamma)-ELISpot and rubella-IgG-ELISA were compared in 75 young adults aged between 20 and 30 years. In a subgroup, not only rubella-like particles (RLP), but also HPV77 rubella vaccine derived antigen was used in IFN gamma-ELISpot. The results from both, ELISA a… Show more

“…Similarly, high IL-10 production has been inversely correlated with influenza antibody production following trivalent influenza vaccine vaccination (6). Contrary to these findings, our group and others have demonstrated minimal or no correlation between cellular immune responses and the antibody response to measles and rubella viruses following MMR vaccination (1,7,28).…”

“…However, there have been few reports regarding the combination of humoral and cellular immunity against rubella [11,[13][14][15][16]. The present study focused on the antibody changes associated with cellular immunity over a two-year interval following vaccination.…”

“…However both are particularly essential for molecular epidemiologic surveillance, they have some limitations in clinical diagnosis due to the degradation of virus and its RNA as a result of incorrect transport or storage conditions also the restricted time for sample collection as a result of short duration of viral shedding [Organization ; Abernathy et al, , Wandinger et al, ]. For these reasons recently acquired rubella is commonly confirmed by RV‐specific IgM antibody detection in the serum [Abernathy et al, , Allmendinger et al, ]. However, rubella primary infection is not always the only cause of IgM positivity [Wilson et al, ].…”
