Determination of serum aflatoxin B1-lysine to evaluate the efficacy of an aflatoxin-adsorbing feed additive in pigs fed an aflatoxin B1-contaminated diet

Abstract: In this study, serum aflatoxin B (AFB)-lysine was determined in order to evaluate the in vivo efficacy of a hydrated sodium calcium aluminosilicate (HSCAS) in pigs fed AFB. Twenty-four 49-day-old crossbred barrows were maintained in individual cages and allowed ad libitum access to feed and water. A completely randomized design was used with six animals assigned to each of four dietary treatments for 21 days as follows: (A) basal diet (BD), (B) BD supplemented with 0.5 % HSCAS, (C) BD supplemented with 1.1 mg/… Show more

“…When the cell proliferation reached a certain level, the adsorption ratio basically did not change, which was consistent with other reports (Piotrowska 2014). The phenomenon that adsorption ratios decreased with the increase of DBP concentration was similar to Lactobacillus acidophilus in adsorbing aflatoxin (Di Gregorio et al 2017).…”

“…The articles about AFs are from Di Gregorio (Di Gregorio et al, 2017a;Di Gregorio et al, 2017b) who for one hand set and optimized a method for the determination of AFB1-lys in serum and heparinized swine plasma. “…A limited number of studies have used monitoring of biomarkers for exposure to determine the efficacy of mycotoxin binders [33,34,35,36,37]. In broiler chickens, Devreese et al [33] and Osselaere et al [34] selected DON, and Dänicke et al [37] selected ZEN and AZEL as biomarkers to evaluate the efficacy.…”

“…In broiler chickens, Devreese et al [33] and Osselaere et al [34] selected DON, and Dänicke et al [37] selected ZEN and AZEL as biomarkers to evaluate the efficacy. Di Gregorio et al [35] tested AFB1-lysine as biomarker for efficacy in pigs. The above-mentioned studies only investigated the influence of a binder on one mycotoxin in one biological matrix (plasma [33,34,35]).…”
