Determination of Sixteen Elements and Arsenic Species in Brown, Polished and Milled Rice

Abstract: The concentrations of 16 elements in 10 rice flour samples and the distribution of the elements in the rice grains from which the flour were made were determined by ICP-MS and ICP-OES after microwave-assisted digestion of the samples. Arsenic speciation analysis was carried out by HPLC-ICP-MS following heat-assisted extraction of the sample. The concentrations of inorganic As (As(III) and As(V)), monomethylarsonic acid (MMAA) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMAA) and their distribution in the rice grains were determ… Show more

“…Therefore, after evaluating the dependence of the extraction property of As(III) and As(IV) on the acidity, 0.015 mol L -1 HNO3 solution had been selected in this experiment. 18,19 The chromatograms of samples ID-1, ID-5 and ID-10 are shown in Fig. 3.…”

“…The shoots and roots of the plants were collected, carefully washed with deionized water and dried. The methods for measuring the contents of copper and cadmium followed those mentioned in Narukawa et al’s paper [24]. Briefly, the dried samples were digested with 15.3 M HNO 3 in a microwave digestion system ETHOS One (Milestone Inc., Milan, Italy).…”

“…Accordingly, AsB is the most useful species to be used as an internal standard for accurate analysis of the analytes. 38,39 However, if the separation of AsB and DMAA is poor, the analytical precision for DMAA becomes low and some correction related to the behavior of the internal standard may be necessary. For the analysis of rice flour samples on the ODS column, conditions under which five species, namely, As(V), As(III), MMAA, DMAA and AsB, are completely separated are necessary.…”
