Determination of the optimal mating age of colonised Glossina brevipalpis and Glossina austeni using walk-in field cages in South Africa

Abstract: Background: For the control of Glossina brevipalpis and Glossina austeni that occur in South Africa an area-wide integrated pest management (AW-IPM) program with a sterile insect technique (SIT) component has been proposed. The quality of the released sterile male tsetse flies will greatly determine the success of the SIT component of the programme. Sterile males need to be able to compete with wild males immediately after their release in the affected area. The mating competitiveness can be affected by many f… Show more

“…Similar observations were reported with other species, i.e. 3-day old male G. brevipalpis and G. austeni were less successful in mating as compared with older males [ 58 ]. In other studies, 6–8 day old-males G. p. gambiensis were used for mating studies [ 59 ] and older G. pallidipes males copulated more often than young males [ 44 , 60 ].…”

“…Similar to previous walk-in field cage experiments conducted in South Africa, male and female flies dispersed immediately after release and settled in the more shaded areas in the top of the cage on the black band that connects the ceiling to the vertical panels [43]. Some flies remained immobile after release until recaptured and did not mate.…”

“…brevipalpis males was conducted during February 2013 in walk-in field cages [37,42] deployed in a small forest under near-natural conditions at the ARC-OVI [43]. The cylindrical walk-in field cages (Ø 2.9 m x 2.0 m) were made of cream polyester netting with a flat floor and ceiling.…”

“…The optimal mating age for G. brevipalpis and G. austeni was also determined in walk-in field cages. Age was identified as a factor that can influence mating competitiveness, and it was recommended that nine day-old or older males be used in the implementation of the SIT [ 107 ]. The effects of low temperature storage of irradiated G. palpalis gambiensis male pupae were also assessed.…”
