Determination of the Waterway Parameters as a Component of Safety Management System

Abstract: This article presents the use of a computer application codenamed “NEPTUN” to ascertain the waterway parameters of the modernised Świnoujście–Szczecin waterway. The designed program calculates the individual risks in selected sections of the fairway depending on the input data, including the parameters of the ship, available water area, and positioning methods. The collected data used for analyses in individual modules are stored in a SQL server of shared access. Vector electronic navigation charts of S-57 sta… Show more

“…In maritime traffic safety diagnosis, the Port and Fishing Port Design Standards and the Harbor Approach Channels Design Guidelines of the International Association of Water Transportation Facilities (PIANC Rule) are reviewed to determine the appropriateness of the design of fairways. In these design standards, when designing the width of a channel approaching a port, based on the size of the largest vessel passing through the target sea, one-way and two-way traffic are separated and presented as standards [26][27][28].…”

“…Although, due to geographical prerequisites, the use of waterways for freight transportation differs at continental and country levels (Ines-Danube, 2017). Also, the density of the natural waterways route is much more subordinate than that of the road, giving road transport an edge in offering customers a wide range of services (Bak & Zalewski, 2021). Consequently, because the road mode is already well-developed and offers modern services to its customers, river transport is often faced with difficulty and various challenges in investment concerning logistics services centres and warehouses, among others which are often located away from waterways (Kotowska, 2018;Kaup et al, 2020).…”
