Determination of water‐soluble carbohydrates in grass

Abstract: The atten$ted removal of extraraeous Ketolzic materialsSuch materials causing variation in the conversion factor may possibly be removed if the extract is percolated through activated alumina prior to analysis (after the method of Brown et aZ.12). This technique has been satisfactorily employed in the direct spectrophotometric method of a n a l y~i s .~ Preliminary investigation indicated that deviation between conversion factors for distilled and normal extract was reduced by treatment with alumina to 5%. Thi… Show more

“…The sulphuric acid lignin (Lignin (sa)) was determined by washing samples with 20N H 2 SO 4 for 3 h (AOAC, 1990;method 973.18). The water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC) were estimated by the method of McDonald and Henderson (1964). Glucose, sucrose and fructose were determined by HPLC (Shimadzu, Tokyo, Japan).…”

“…Crude protein and crude fibre were estimated according to standard methods (AOAC, 1990). Water soluble carbohydrates (WSC) were determined according to the modified method of McDonald and Henderson (1964). Silage ammonia nitrogen in FO silage was corrected for the ammonia-N applied with this additive.…”

“…9 Dry matter (DM) content of fresh and preserved lucerne was determined by freeze-drying and the dried sample was ground to pass through a 1 mm screen. Water-soluble carbohydrates (WSCs) were determined by the method of McDonald and Henderson 10 and in vitro digestion was carried out according to the two-stage technique. 11 Buffering capacity of lucerne was measured by titration 12 using the dried sample.…”
