Determination of Wide Burnishing Energy-Force Parameters based on Constructing the Kinematically Admissible Velocity Field

Abstract: Processing technology using productive surface plastic deformation (SPD) was developed and is known as “wide burnishing” (WB). The mechanics of new WB technology differs from classic SPD technologies (rolling or burnishing). For example, force, applied during burnishing, is equal to 150–300 N, but for WB it is equal to 2500–5000 N due to implementing this process in mass production, characterized with limited processing time (3–4 turns of the work piece). WB also has a high degree of deformation due to a multi… Show more

“…The burnishing process is a surface plastic working technique that is known by researchers and scientists, but first of all research is carried out on single-layer materials [ 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 44 , 45 , 46 , 47 , 48 , 49 , 50 , 51 ] and not for coated materials. Therefore, and based on our own research, an experimental analysis of the burnishing of products with the applied alloy and composite coatings was undertaken.…”

“…Aluminum matrix composites (AMCs) were analyzed [20] by applying different contact forces and feeds and roller bodies manufactured from cemented carbide. Roller burnishing enables the generation of smooth surfaces [17][18][19][20][21][22][23] with strong compressive residual stresses [18][19][20][21]23,24]. That is why burnishing rolling is also very often taken into account in numerical analyses [22][23][24][25][26][27].…”

“…During burnishing, the workpiece rotates and the deforming tool (indenter), which is in contact with the workpiece surface and fixed in an appliance, has a longitudinal motion. Wide burnishing technology, where the indenter contacts the workpiece along the lateral surface without the longitudinal motion, is described in [2,3].…”
