Determining the lowest trypan blue concentration that satisfactorily stains the anterior capsule

Abstract: As trypan blue is a potentially carcinogenic vital dye and its possible long-term side effects are unknown, the lowest effective concentration should be used. A concentration lower than 0.1% was effective in staining the anterior capsule even under dispersive viscoelastic material.

“…Unfortunately, the study did not have a control group for comparison. 11 This technique of staining under viscoelastic was also assessed by Ernus et al 12 and the postoperative outcomes were similar to the fellow eye with senile cataract undergoing phacoemulsification without staining.…”

“…Capsular staining under air, however, was criticized as time-consuming and it may be difficult to reform the anterior chamber with a single air bubble. 11 An alternative staining technique without the use of an air bubble was suggested by Yetik et al 11 and involves injection of dispersive viscoelastic. The underside of the injection cannula was used to spread the dye mechanically to obtain homogenous stain.…”

“…Several techniques for staining the anterior lens capsules have been used, such as direct vital dye application in the anterior chamber under an air bubble or not, dye application under a viscoelastic substance in the anterior chamber, and subcapsular application (Pandey et al 2000, Yetik et al 2002, Xiao et al 2004, Allen et al 2006. The last three techniques are indicated for reducing the possible toxic effects of the dye to the corneal endothelium (Yetik et al 2002, Allen et al 2006.…”

“…The last three techniques are indicated for reducing the possible toxic effects of the dye to the corneal endothelium (Yetik et al 2002, Allen et al 2006. In this research, the use of the brilliant blue intracameral dye without another substance or air bubble was done to produce direct contacts between the vital dye and the corneal endothelium.…”
