Deutsche Hochschulkarrieren im Fach Volkswirtschaftslehre. Eine deskriptive Analyse von Lebenslaufdaten

Abstract: In this article we describe and analyze the career paths of academic economists employed at German universities. We construct a unique data set combining information from publicly available sources and a web-based poll. The data set covers CV information of 583 individuals that are either tenured or in their post-doc phase. This allows us to document and to analyze patterns of typical career paths and the changes of these patterns over time. “…We proxy individual age of an author by the mean age of his/her peers at each career stage. According to Heining et al (2008), German economists, on average, pass their first university degree (Diplom) at the age of 25, they complete their Ph.D. at the age of 30 and they receive their habilitation at the age of 36. Again, we assign the average age of all contributing authors to each DGF paper, if available.…”

“…With respect to individuals, not papers, there exists an exhaustive literature which explores success factors of academics in the field of economics and business (see Graber et al 2008;Schulze et al 2008;Heining et al 2008, and the numerous references therein). Among other success factors as, e.g., the reputation of the school granting the Ph.D., this literature stresses the decisive role of publications for the progress of an academic career as both, quality and quantity of publications are crucial for tenure and salary decisions.…”

“…Schulze et al (2008) suggest journal rankings that include business economics journals and discuss their relative merits. The paper most closely related to ours is by Heining et al (2007), who run various Cox regressions to identify determinants of success in the academic job market. Our results are more focused on one particular determinant, to wit publications.…”
