Developable Approximation via Gauss Image Thinning

Abstract: Approximating 3D shapes with piecewise developable surfaces is an active research topic, driven by the benefits of developable geometry in fabrication. Piecewise developable surfaces are characterized by having a Gauss image that is a 1D object – a collection of curves on the Gauss sphere. We present a method for developable approximation that makes use of this classic definition from differential geometry. Our algorithm is an iterative process that alternates between thinning the Gauss image of the surface an… Show more

“…The initial cross-field is updated after each sketch to allow the patch decomposition to conform to the newly inserted constraints. We handle sketches in the same manner as Pietroni et al [2021] handle sharp features. Our method allows real-time editing for small models (up to 3000 triangles) and takes a few seconds to process larger models.…”

We adapt the method by Pietroni et al [2021] to suit the different setting of garment design and fabrication, where the topology requirements are different and textile based distortion measures must be bounded.…”

“…Alternative approaches apply the condition that a developable surface has a one-dimensional Gauss image, i.e it is a network of curves in the Gauss sphere [16]. Based on this definition, the recent work of Binninger et al [17] proposed a novel algorithm based on iterative deformation of a given surface by 'thinning' its Gauss image.…”

“…A more recent approach to creating developable surfaces is through the approximation of existing shapes with developables. Proposed methods include cutting surfaces into developable pieces [Sharp and Crane 2018], fitting developable patches to a surface [Ion et al 2020], and flowing existing surfaces to reduce a discrete developability measure [Binninger et al 2021;Kohlbrenner et al 2021;Liu and Jacobson 2021;Sellán et al 2020;Stein et al 2018].…”
