Developing a hybrid, carbon/glass fiber-reinforced, epoxy composite automotive drive shaft

Abstract: In this study, a finite element analysis was used to design composite drive shafts incorporating carbon and glass fibers within an epoxy matrix. A configuration of one layer of carbon-epoxy and three layers of glass-epoxy with 0°, 45° and 90° was used. The developed layers of structure consists of four layers stacked as [+45glass°/-45glass°/0carbon°/90glass°]. The results show that, in changing carbon fibers winding angle from 0° to 90°, the loss in the natural frequency of the shaft is 44.5%, while, shifting … Show more

“…A common form of composite structures is the composite laminated tube, which is widely used in fields such as oil drilling [3,4], automobile [5][6][7][8], aerospace [9,10], and civil engineering [11][12][13]. Rangaswamy et al [7] designed automotive drive shafts using E-glass/epoxy laminates and carbon/epoxy laminates.…”

“…Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs) and glass-fiber-reinforced plastics (GFRPs) are new materials that have high performance [1,2]. Both types of these composites have high strength-to-weight ratio and excellent fatigue strength [3], high corrosion resistance so that the material is so widely used in the fields of aerospace and automotive industries [4,5,6]. Mechanical properties and GFRPs CFRPs with epoxy-reinforced not only depend on the intrinsic characteristics of CFRPs and GFRPs of the epoxy resin, but also by the interfacial interactions in the CFRPs and GFRPs / epoxy interphase [7,8].…”
