Abstract: A six-session intervention for harmful alcohol use was piloted via a 24-hour alcohol and other drug (AOD) helpline, assessing feasibility of telephone-delivered treatment. “…Of the treatments that were delivered by a practitioner, via telephone or online and individually, five effective elements were present. If a counselling session is given over the phone by a practitioner and a (1) workbook is sent out afterwards on how to reduce alcohol consumption [ 39 , 61 ] or if (2) personalized feedback is given before or after the telephone sessions [ 39 , 62 , 64 ], then drinking behavior is reduced, also among older adults. (3) If an in-person session is followed by a phone call [ 65 ], this also helps to reduce drinking behavior.…”

“…The AUDIT is a validated 10-item instrument for measuring alcohol problem severity [31]. It has been shown to be a sensitive measure of change over varying time periods [22,32], and has demonstrated utility as a continuous [33] and categorical [34] outcome measure. Symptom categories are: 0-7 = low risk or abstinence; 8-15 = risky alcohol use; 16-19 = harmful/hazardous alcohol use; 20-40 = possible dependence [35].…”
