Development and Laboratory Performance Evaluation of a Personal Multipollutant Sampler for Simultaneous Measurements of Particulate and Gaseous Pollutants

Abstract: A personal multipollutant sampler has been developed. This sampler can be used for measuring exposures to particulate matter and criteria gases. The system uses a single personal sampling pump that operates at a ow rate of 5.2 l/min. The basic unit consists of two impaction-based samplers for PM 2:5 and PM 10 attached to a single elutriator. Two mini PM 2:5 samplers are also attached to the elutriator for organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), sulfate, and nitrate measurements. For the collection of nitra… Show more

“…The LOD for the 24-hr integrated HI was 1 µg/m 3 ; for the 24-hr integrated HPEM 2.5 , the LOD was 6.2 µg/m 3 for the first four sessions and 4.5 µg/m 3 afterward. This reduction was achieved by replacing the oiled porous impaction plate with vacuum grease to reduce contamination from silicon oil (Demokritou et al 2001), and adding a drain disk downstream of the Teflon filter. This 4.5 µg/m 3 LOD for HPEM 2.5 is similar to values (2.6-4.0 µg/m 3 ) reported by Sarnat et al (2000).…”

“…Particles > 2.5 µm in diameter were originally collected on a porous metal impaction plate coated with silicon oil immediately downstream of the inlet; particles < 2.5 µm bypassed the impaction plate and were collected on a 37-mm Teflon filter (polytetrafluoroethylene with support ring, model 225-1709; SKC, Inc., Eighty Four, PA). Because of an oil contamination problem, the entire porous metal plate was replaced with silicon vacuum grease after the first four sessions (Demokritou et al 2001).…”
