In this article we present results from a 2-year comprehensive exposure assessment study that examined the particulate matter (PM) exposures and health effects in 108 individuals with and without chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), coronary heart disease (CHD), and asthma. The average personal exposures to PM with aerodynamic diameters < 2.5 µm (PM 2.5 ) were similar to the average outdoor PM 2.5 concentrations but significantly higher than the average indoor concentrations. Personal PM 2.5 exposures in our study groups were lower than those reported in other panel studies of susceptible populations. Indoor and outdoor PM 2.5 , PM 10 (PM with aerodynamic diameters < 10 µm), and the ratio of PM 2.5 to PM 10 were significantly higher during the heating season. The increase in outdoor PM 10 in winter was primarily due to an increase in the PM 2.5 fraction. A similar seasonal variation was found for personal PM 2.5 . The high-risk subjects in our study engaged in an equal amount of dust-generating activities compared with the healthy elderly subjects. The children in the study experienced the highest indoor PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentrations. Personal PM 2.5 exposures varied by study group, with elderly healthy and CHD subjects having the lowest exposures and asthmatic children having the highest exposures. Within study groups, the PM 2.5 exposure varied depending on residence because of different particle infiltration efficiencies. Although we found a wide range of longitudinal correlations between central-site and personal PM 2.5 measurements, the longitudinal r is closely related to the particle infiltration efficiency. PM 2.5 exposures among the COPD and CHD subjects can be predicted with relatively good power with a microenvironmental model composed of three microenvironments. The prediction power is the lowest for the asthmatic children.

AbstractQuantifying human exposure to air pollutants is a challenging task. Ambient concentrations of air pollutants at potentially harmful levels are ubiquitous in urban areas and subject to high spatial and temporal variability. At the same time, every individual has unique activitypatterns. Exposure results from multifaceted relationships and interactions between environmental and human systems, adding complexity to the assessment process. Traditionally, approaches to quantify human exposure have relied on pollutant concentrations from fixed air quality network sites and static population distributions. New developments in sensor technology now enable us to monitor personal exposure to air pollutants directly while people are moving through their activity spaces and varying concentration fields. The literature review on which this paper is based on reflects recent developments in the assessment of human exposure to air pollution. This includes the discussion of methodologies and concepts, and the elaboration of approaches and study designs applied in the field. We identify shortcomings of current approaches and discuss future research needs. We close by proposing a novel conceptual model for the integrated assessment of human exposure to air pollutants taking into account latest technological capabilities and contextual information.

A longitudinal study investigating personal exposures to PM 2.5 , nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), and carbon monoxide (CO) for cardiac compromised individuals was conducted in Toronto, Canada. The aim of the study was (1) to examine the distribution of exposures to PM 2.5 , NO 2 , and CO; and (2) to investigate the relationship between personal exposures and fixed-site ambient measurements of PM 2.5 , NO 2 , and CO. In total, 28 subjects with coronary artery disease wore the Rupprecht & Patashnick ChemPass Personal Sampling System one day a week for a maximum of 10 weeks. The mean (SD) personal exposures were 22 mg m À3 (42), 14 p.p.b. (6), and 1.4 p.p.m (0.5) for PM 2.5 , NO 2 , and CO, respectively. PM 2.5 and CO personal exposures were greater than central fixed-site ambient measurements, while the reverse pattern was observed for NO 2 . Ambient PM 2.5 and NO 2 were correlated with personal exposures to PM 2.5 and NO 2 with median Spearman's correlation coefficients of 0.69 and 0.57, respectively. The correlations between personal exposures and ambient measurements made closest to the subjects' homes or the average of all stations within the study were not stronger than the correlation between personal exposures and central fixed-site measurements. Personal exposures to PM 2.5 were correlated with personal exposures to NO 2 (median Spearman's correlation coefficient of 0.43). This study suggests that central fixed-site measurements of PM 2.5 and NO 2 may be treated as surrogates for personal exposures to PM 2.5 and NO 2 in epidemiological studies, and that NO 2 is a potential confounder of PM 2.5 .
