Development and Validation of a 6-Point Grading Scale in Patients Undergoing Correction of Nasolabial Folds with a Collagen Implant

Abstract: The GGS is a reproducible method of grading the severity of NLF wrinkles. Treatment effectiveness of a dermal filler can be reliably evaluated using the GGS by comparing "live" assessments with the standard GGS photographic panel.

“…These include the wrinkle severity rating scale (WSRS) [23], the modified Fitzpatrick wrinkle scale (MFWS) [7], the Lemperle scale [28], the Glogau scale [29], the Fitzpatrick scale [30], the Carruthers scales [24,34] and the Genzyme scale [35]. Many other scales exist developed for specific areas of the face, and are not included in this discussion.…”

“…descriptive, visual analogue and photographic scales. Most of these scales are intended for assessment of specific body regions, such as cheek sagging, crow's feet [1], nasolabial folds [2], lip fullness [3], marionette lines [4], forehead wrinkles [5] while a few are intended for the entire face [6]. The drawback of these scales is that the quality of scoring is strongly influenced by the level of experience of the examiner as the assessment is based on a subjective visual perception of lines and wrinkles rather than actual physical measurements.…”

“…9,10 Facial lines are currently treated most often with cross-linked hyaluronic acid and less often with other biodegradable injectable dermal fillers such as calcium hydroxyl apatite. 9,10,[15][16][17] Rating scales have ordinal properties as they are based on ranking the results from most to least preferred and are therefore at best semiquantitative. The combination of fillers and toxin usually leads to superior treatment outcomes and prolongs the effects of treatment.…”
