Development of a 3D HUD using a tunable bandpass filter for wavelength multiplexing

Abstract: A 3D stereoscopic head‐up display using a tunable bandpass filter to perform left and right image spectral separation is presented. Using a single filter reduces the size and the cost of the head‐up display optical engine and enables each spectral band to be accurately tuned. Experiments performed on the first prototype demonstrate the ability to continuously tune the bandpass frequency on 30‐nm range while keeping a 20‐nm bandwidth. Such a system avoids the use of a bulky and costly rotating wheel and enables… Show more

“…Our novel idea is to use only one PGU to generate at least two colors at λ1 & λ2 and with [λ1, λ2] as small as possible (Typically 15 nm). This requires a special PGU, able to multiplex two wavelengths, for example by using a tunable bandpass filter [8] The windshield glass will be fitted with two HOEs, with the same angular selectivity (same θ), but with different optical power (At least, one of the HOE acts as a lens to magnify the image, that appears at a longer distance (Figure 7). The system needs to be designed off-axis, in order to get diffracted beam in the eye box, and Fresnel reflection out of the eye box.…”

“…Holographicoptical-elements-based HUDs have also been demonstrated to provide an asymmetric FOV [2]. On the other hand, the development of three-dimensional (3D) HUDs is usually limited to lenticular-screenbased multi-view displays [3] wavelength-division-multiplexed systems [4], and transparent-screen-based stereo 3D HUDs [5,6].…”
