“…river stretches) (Soranno et al , ). Second, the spatial distribution of species must respond to the alterations assessed (Launois et al , ). Third, the use of this framework relies on the availability of relevant information about the conservation status, the biogeographical origin, the ecological traits and the socio‐economic value of all the species considered (Maire et al , ).…”

“…The analytical reference condition is obtained by lowering the value of the human disturbance variables included in predictive models, thus providing an estimation of the value of the response variable with no or reduced disturbance (Soranno et al, 2011). For instance, Launois et al (2011) used hindcasting modelling to build a fish-based index to assess the ecological integrity of lakes in France, although most of the lakes studied were already strongly altered. This paper describes a conservation and restoration planning framework developed and applied to the fish assemblages of the river network of the Pas-de-Calais department in northern France.…”

“…Water quality strongly influences fish assemblages in lakes (Nürnberg 1995;Jeppesen et al 2000;Drake and Pereira 2002), and fish-based measures have been useful for understanding the effects of eutrophication (Larkin and Northcote 1969;Lee et al 1991;Launois et al 2011). Watershed/water quality effects on fish communities are frequently significant even when physical habitat effects are not (Jennings et al 1999;Mehner et al 2005;Søndergaard and Jeppesen 2007).…”

“…Pearson's correlation was used to clarify the correlation between each variable and to identify significant similarities in the patterns of variation among all the water quality variables. Based on the results of Pearson's correlation (r> 0.8), if two water quality variables were highly correlated, only one variable was retained to avoid redundancy (Launois et al, 2011;Oliveira et al, 2011). Then, the classification and weighted values of the selected water quality parameters were calculated according to Principal component analysis (PCA).…”
