“…Though the measurement of orocaecal transit times is rarely performed in clinical routine, a reliable assessment of the intestinal transit is desirable, particularly in pharmacological trials. Emerging technologies of enteral drug delivery systems require an exact definition of the delivery site within the intestine to warrant pharmacokinetic and dynamic actions that have been predicted in ex vivo models [12,13,17–20]. The therapeutic consequences of intestinal transit testing for routine purposes still remains to be determined.…”

“…The small intestine can be divided into three segments: duodenum, jejunum, and ileum [ 102 ]. The transit time of the small intestine was found to be between 30 min and 4.5 h [ 103 ]. Once the gastric content enters the duodenum, it is neutralized by bicarbonate derived from the pancreas, liver, and duodenal mucosa, causing pH fluctuations [ 104 ].…”

“…Radiopaque markers are mainly suitable for the study of colonic and whole gut transit. Hydrogen breath test measures orocecal transit time rather than the pure small intestinal transit time, and its results may be misinterpreted in the presence of SIBO ( 1 , 3 ).…”
