Development of a novel intra-abdominal pressure transducer for large scale clinical studies

Abstract: Intra-abdominal pressure may be one of the few modifiable risk factors associated with developing a pelvic floor disorder. With one in eight women having surgery to correct a pelvic floor disorder in their lifetimes, intra-abdominal pressure may be a key to understanding the disease etiology and how to mitigate its occurrence and progression. Many traditional methods of intra-abdominal pressure measurement have limitations in data quality, environment of use, and patient comfort. We have modified a previously … Show more

“…Embora o foco dos trabalhos não fossem nas ferramentas de análise, o sensor desenvolvido academicamente foi usado em diversos estudos, o que culminou no mais recente trabalho do grupo no desenvolvimento de sondas pressóricas [19]. Nesse último trabalho o grupo relata problemas com as sondas anteriores relacionados com a transmissão do sinal de rádio frequência escolhido para transmitir os dados captados pelo sensor.…”

“…However, this requires sophisticated fabrication facilities and leaves the possibility of capsule retention in the digestive tract of patients [ 11 ]. There have been advancements in sensor development, such as integrated circuit-based pressure sensors through intra-vaginal IAP measurement [ 12 ]. Other advancements include microfluidic device-based ultrasonic imaging, which is more invasive and requires the sensor to be implanted [ 13 ], as well as the use of tensiometry to measure abdominal wall tension [ 14 ].…”

“…Elevated IAP has been implicated in many medical complications, including hernias, severe drops in cardiac output, and postoperative complications such as prolonged healing time and wound dehiscence. Furthermore, intra-abdominal pressure may be one of the few modifiable risk factors associated with developing a pelvic floor disorder [ 2 ]. Since the peritoneal cavity is a closed space, changes to its volume due to body position, muscle contraction, or respiration can change IAP, which is a key physiological process that occurs regularly during various activities [ 3 ].…”
