Development of a Novel Nanocomposite Using Polypyrrole Grafted Chitosan-Decorated CDs with Improved Photocatalytic Activity under Solar Light Illumination

Abstract: A novel composite has recently been synthesized by in situ carbon dots (CDs) deposited functionalized chitosan (polypyrrole grafted chitosan) with improved photocatalytic activity toward degradation of toxic 2-chloro phenol (2-CP) into small compounds. The CDs has been prepared using waste watermelon seeds. Various advanced characterization techniques have been performed to confirm the development of copolymer and composite. In situ incorporation of CDs on the copolymer not only enhanced the photocatalytic rat… Show more

“…In Figure S7, cyclic voltammograms of three different samples of PPy obtained at 1.2 V (42 mC/cm 2 ) are shown. Significant differences in the HOMO and LUMO levels of PPy are found in the literature: for example, HOMO levels vs. vacuum between −5.46 and −6.21 eV and LUMO levels vs. vacuum between −3.61 and −4.19 eV [59][60][61]. Even so, there are few reports about strategies for tuning energy levels of PPy.…”

“…Various metal oxides and other nanomaterials have been synthesized with conductive polymers to prepare composite materials or complexes with enhanced mechanical properties and desirable physical and structural properties [ 16 , 17 ]. Doping conductive polymers with CDs results in considerably enhanced photocatalytic activity of the polymer nanocomposites [ 18 ]. CDs have several attractive properties, such as photoluminescence, high mechanical strength, narrow band-gap, and optical transparency, in addition to being biodegradable, biocompatible, and nontoxic [ 19 , 20 ].…”

“…Therefore, they have great potential in physical and biomedical applications. Polymers decorated with CDs exhibit enhanced hydrodynamic radii, high density, and high surface area [ 18 ]. Besides, the polymer composites of PANI@TiO 2 , PANI/ZnO, PANI/SiO 2 , PANI/ZrO 2 , and PANI/Ag have been used as adsorbents for organic dyes [ 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 ].…”

“…To achieve more remarkable performance, CDs are usually modied to couple with other materials, such as metal and nonmetal nanoparticles, [17][18][19][20][21][22] as well as organic and polymeric materials. [23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30] Shi et al synthesized core-shell Au@CDs NPs with a shell CD-thickness of ca. 2 nm through the direct reduction of HAuCl 4 by CDs, which enhanced surface Raman scattering measurements.…”

“…26 Pal et al synthesized CD-deposited polypyrrole-graed chitosan (Ch-g-PPy/CDs), which exhibited much higher photocatalytic activity toward degradation of toxic 2-chloro phenol into small compounds in comparison with CDs, PPy/CDs and Ch-g-PPy. 30 However, both PcZn/N-CDs and Ch-g-PPy/CDs could not be rmly bonded due to their weak interaction. Hence, their application is limited by the detachment of CDs from the corresponding nanocomposites in the solvent.…”
