Development of a Turkish Version of the Sensory Profile: Translation, Cross-Cultural Adaptation, and Psychometric Validation

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to translate and culturally adapt the Sensory Profile (SP), which is used to measure sensory processing abilities of children ages of 3-10 years, and test its reliability and validity for use with Turkish children with autism. A cross-cultural adaptation process was carried out by bilingual experts, following typical guidelines. The test-retest reliability, internal consistency, and construct validity studies of the Turkish SP were done for 144 children with autism. A comparison w… Show more

“…Dunn (1999) reported a significant correlation between sensory profile and school function assessment and a good internal consistency (α = .47-.91) along with construct and content validity for this profile. Also a study conducted to translate SP into Turkish (Kayihan et al, 2015) obtained Cronbach's α values ranging from .63 to .97 and a high 1-week test-retest reliability for the scale (intraclass correlation [ICC] > .90). In the present study, an acceptable overall Cronbach's alpha (α = .91) was obtained.…”

“…SP measures sensory processing, modulation, behavioural and emotional responses (Dunn, 1999). Internal consistency of the SP estimated by Cronbach's α, ranged from 0.63 to 0.97 for subscale, and test-retest reliability of all subsections of SP which indicated excellent (>.90) in the Turkish version of the SP (Kayihan et al, 2015).…”

“…Internal consistency of the GARS-2 estimated by Cronbach's α, ranged from 0.77 to 0.88 for subscale, and test-retest reliability of all subsections of GARS-2 which indicated (>.98) excellent (Diken, Ardıç, & Diken, 2011). The Turkish version of the Sensory Profile (SP) was utilized to evaluate the sensory processing abilities of children with ASD in this study (Kayihan et al, 2015). The SP includes 125 items for children aged 3-10 years, and is completed by a caregiver or a specialist who knows the information and has observed the child.…”

“…The cross-cultural adaptation of the questionnaire was carried out and Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.63 to 0.97 with excellent test-/re-test reliability. 29 Sensory Integration and Praxis Test (SIPT) is a standardized test battery which evaluates sensory processing disorders in children aged between 4 years and 8 years and 11 months. 30 The test has high interrater reliability (r³.90) and discriminates between typical and atypical samples (p<.01).…”
