Development of an Abbreviated Fonr of the Alcohol Expectancy Questionnaire for Adolescents

Abstract: This article reports the development of an abbreviated version of the Alcohol Expectancy Questionnaire for Adolescents (AEQ-A) that has acceptable psychometric properties. A sample of seventh graders was split randomly into two halves, and the abbreviated version was developed using the two halves of the sample, including cross validation with half of the sample. All 90 items of the seven original AEQ-A subscales were administered to both halves of the sample. After psychometric processing, five abbreviated su… Show more

“…This abbreviated 18-item AEQ contained three items drawn from each of the six AEQ factors. Although several short forms of the AEQ have been tailored for young adolescents (e.g., Aas, 1993;Webb, Baer, Caid, McKelvey, & Converse, 1992), the short form used with adults either includes only two of the six original AEQ factors (Rather, 1990) or is still comprised of 68 items (Goldman et al, 1997), thus limiting the utility of these versions of the AEQ for this study. Total scores on this brief assessment of positive AEs could range from 0 to 18.…”

“…Nevertheless, the AEQ-AB negative scale was also positively associated with the APNE positive factor. This result does not come as a surprise since the psychometric properties of the original English version of the AEQ-AB have to be considered with caution (Stein et al, 2007;Webb et al, 1992) due to the small number of items in each scale (4 and 3 respectively). We should stress that although the AEQ-AB is not designed for college students, but rather for assessing adolescents, we included this scale in our study because it was one of the few tools that was translated into Spanish and contained both positive and negative expectations.…”

“…Alcohol Expectancy Questionnaire-Adolescent, Brief (AEQ-AB) (Webb et al, 1992). The Spanish version of this scale (Gázquez et al, 2015) reports beliefs about the positive and negative effects of alcohol consumption on the social and emotional behavior of adolescents.…”
