Development of an Advanced Composite System Form for Constructability Improvement Through a Design for Six Sigma Process

Abstract: System form is widely used when constructing concrete buildings and structures because it has high productivity and good concrete casting quality compared with traditional hand-set form. However, from a worker’s perspective, system form is still very harsh to handle because of its heavy weight, noise generation, and use of releasing agent, and it also attenuates the productivity of system formwork. Therefore, this study proposes the use of an advanced composite material-based concrete form for workers using a … Show more

“…Formwork may be the most critical factor in RC construction, accounting for up to 60% of the unit cost of the RC structure [25] and up to 15% of the entire construction cost [104]. As various FWSs have different characteristics (e.g., FWS weight, FWS size), the selected FWS may affect labour productivity and labour cost [105]. Furthermore, the early involvement of the FWF in the FWS supply chain and local logistical support from the FWF can shorten delivery times and save transportation costs [86].…”

“…Moon et al [40] established a methodology to provide design alternatives for temporary construction in VE by integrating the problem-solving principles of TRIZ. Lee et al [41] integrated TRIZ and quality function deployment to develop an advanced composite material-based concrete formwork with improved constructability. Such TRIZ-related methods escape from traditional processes-based approaches and generate innovative solutions based on global human intelligence, generally from the public patent databases.…”

“…To derive the user requirements, interviews were first conducted with two supervisors of two high-rise building construction projects, four heads of formwork companies, and six experts in system formwork on-site. A detailed interview process is shown in the author's previous work [19,20]. The results of these interviews are summarized in Table 3.…”

“…A concrete form should endure concrete pressure, live load, and dead load; thus, during concrete casting, there are constraints in mechanical properties to avoid accidents caused by deflection. In addition, from previous research by the author [19,20], there are functional and physical requirements as well for a concrete form. If a material does not satisfy the requirements for each component (i.e., outer frame, inner frame, and panel), it is excluded from the list of alternative materials.…”
