Development of an Augmented Reality environment for the assembly of a precast wood-frame wall using the BIM model

Abstract: Abstracthis article presents the development of an Augmented Reality (AR) application to assist in the assembly of a precast wood-frame wall, based on the BIM model of the wall execution sequence. The research study used the Design Science Research approach and its aim was to develop an AR application named "montAR" (version 2.0). This application offers a tutorial that combines a wall model visualized in AR in actual scale, followed by an audio with step-by-step instructions of the assembly process. Its appli… Show more

“…Projection based AR assisted systems have also been widely used by assembly workers in factories (Funk et al, 2017;Hou et al, 2013;Cuperschmid et al, 2016). These studies measured reduction in task completion time by 50% and fewer implementation errors.…”

“…Since some of the early work investigating the use of AR to support sequential tasks [27] the scope for AR to support construction operations has been well researched. The use for assisting with the understanding of assembly of components has received more recent attention such as [28], [29], [30]. The reporting of some of these studies has shown significant improvements to operations on the construction site, highlighting a 50% reduction in the time to complete the tasks, with fewer errors during construction.…”

“…BIMenabled AR has also been employed in maintenance and operation management, as seen in Baek et al (2019) and K. Chen et al (2019). Furthermore, recent studies have investigated the implementation of AR and BIM in the domains of architecture and construction education (Cuperschmid et al, 2016;Messadi et al, 2019;Vasilevski & Birt, 2020).…”
