Development of appropriate technology for treatment of molasses-based wastewater

Abstract: In this study, the performance of a proposed treatment system consisting of an anaerobic process (acidification, methane fermentation) and an aerobic process (trickling filter) was evaluated for treating high concentrations of molasses-based wastewater (43-120 gCOD/L) by a continuous flow experiment. An anaerobic up-flow staged sludge bed (USSB) reactor, equipped with multiple gas solid separators, was used as the main treatment/methane recovery process. The USSB showed good efficiency of both COD removal (80-… Show more

“…DNA was extracted from the sludge harvested from compartments 16 and 33 using an Isoil beads beating kit (Nippon gene, Japan). About 806 bp of 16S rDNA was amplified by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using the primers A 109f-m (5'-AM DgC TCA gTA ACA CgT-3') and ARC915R (5'-gTg CTC CCC CgC CAA TTC CT-3'), specific for domain Archaea (Syutsubo et al, 2013).…”

“…However, previous literature merely studied AT's acceptance, and a majority of AT research topics focused on either theoretical concepts [4,[8][9][10][11][12] or its engineering aspects [13][14][15]. Further, Uddin et al [16] investigated Muslim communities' sociocultural acceptance of urine-diversion toilets in Bangladesh through surveys and interviews with the local population.…”

“…Several studies have been conducted for selection of appropriate technology for specific type of waste waters, e.g., domestic (Kalbar et al 2012 ), molasses-based wastewater (Syutsubo et al 2013 ), industrial wastewater (Castillo et al 2017 ), disinfection technologies selection for reuse (Gomez-López et al 2009 ), etc. However, the procedure for the selection of an appropriate technology that suits both local environment and reuse quality criteria is not yet defined.…”
