This chapter is intended to explore a brief overview of select reading models and to propose a unified theory of examining literacy practice across multiple modes of meaning. In this work, the author bridges reading to other forms of interacting with text, including forms of communication that draw upon visuals and digital tools. This work is speculative in that it both considers what is already available and hints at a model that can be applied to next transformations and possibilities in literacy practice. The purpose is not to rewrite and undermine existing models; rather, the author intends to posit a theory of literacy that exists alongside and includes aspects of reading development.
