“…An incidence of neonatal-onset epilepsy of 26% (26/100 patients) was calculated from the six studies reporting this information, 2,11,18,21,22,32 From a total of 28 studies, 2,5,10,11,14e19,21e23,28e30, 32,33,35,36,38e42,45,46,49 corresponding to 425 patients, the rate of isolated epilepsy was 19.3% (82/ 425), whereas in the remaining 80.7% (343/425) an association with neurological impairment is reported, variably described in the relative studies. From the analysis of a subset of 16 studies 2,5,10,11,14,17e19, 23,29,32,33,35,40,42,45 which specified the type of associated neurological impairment, if present, in 243 patients with epilepsy, 18% (44/243) presented with epilepsy and intellectual impairment, 6.1% (15/243) with epilepsy and cerebral palsy, 44.8% (109/243) with epilepsy and both intellectual impairment and cerebral palsy.…”

“…Yet, the risk of postneonatal epilepsy in the first several years of life is less than 25% for neonates with acute symptomatic seizures and postneonatal epilepsies (particularly West Syndrome) do not necessarily respond to the medications prescribed in the neonatal period. 1315 …”
