Development of Flood Risk and Hazard Maps for the Lower Course of the Siret River, Romania

Abstract: The Siret River is one of the most important tributaries of the Danube River in the Romanian territory. With a total length of 596 km in this territory, the confluence section of the Siret River with the Danube represents an area where major floods have occurred over time. In the last 50 years, over 20 floods have been recorded in the lower area of the Siret River; and the most recent important flood, which happened in 2010, had a negative impact on the local population, the environment, and the economy. Altho… Show more

“…The interpolation method for minor riverbeds used in this study was inverse distance weighting (IDW). This method is a deterministic spatial interpolation model, based on an assumption that the value at an unsampled point can be approximated by a weighted average of observed values within a circular search neighbourhood [43][44][45]. The DTM resolution for the minor riverbed was computed with a similar resolution as the LIDAR DTM (0.5 m × 0.5 m), but it was resampled up to 1 m, which allowed an easier input of data in the HEC-RAS and Global Mapper software.…”

“…With the increase in the river width, there is a decrease in the flow velocities as well as the depths specific to this area. This favors the deposition of sediments in these places, especially those with high concentrations of heavy metals [59,60].…”

“…On the basis of these data obtained from the underlying terrain, the flow between the cells is computed. To obtain an accurate representation of the flood wave, a proper cell size must be chosen [74,75]. On the one hand, a large cell may lead to loss of details about the flow moving; however, on the other hand if the cell size is too small, this could cause computational instability [23] (Figure 3d).…”
