“…A project is significant if, ''alone or in combination with other concurrent projects nearby, [it] is anticipated to cause sustained work zone impacts that are greater than what is considered tolerable based on state policy and/or engineering judgement,'' or if it is taking place on the interstate system within a transportation management area (TMA) for three or more days with continuous or intermittent lane closures (1). A transportation management area is defined as, ''an urbanized area with a population of over 200,000'' or ''any urbanized area for which TMA designation has been requested by both a state governor and the area's metropolitan planning organization and has been granted by the Secretary of the United States Department of Transportation'' (2).…”

Virginia TMP designations are type A, B, and C; type A is significant projects, while type B and C are for nonsignificant projects (2). Tennessee is straight forward with its naming of TMPs, significant TMPs are for significant projects, while nonsignificant TMPs are for nonsignificant projects, and exempt/recurring TMPs are for projects that will not have work zone impacts (7).…”
