Development of retrotransposon-based SSAP molecular marker system for study of genetic diversity in sea holly (Eryngium maritimum L.)

Abstract: Eryngium maritimum L. is a wild plant species threatened or endangered in most of Northern Europe, where species is on the northern margin of its distribution range. Recent studies have found reduction of size and even extinction of many populations. Assessment of genetic diversity in natural populations of endangered wild plant species can reflect condition and fitness of particular population and inform decisions on appropriate conservation measures. Application of inter simple sequence repeat markers and ch… Show more

“…S-SAP showed lower similarity values than AFLP, which indicates that S-SAP allows for detecting more intraspecific variability in guava than AFLP. The results obtained indicate that S-SAP is more informative for studies of variability and polymorphism of P. guajava, as has been reported for other crops of economic relevance such as barley (Soleimani et al, 2005;Shan et al, 2012), grapevine (Stajner et al, 2015), holly (Levina et al, 2010), and citrus (Biswas et al, 2011), among others.…”

“…On the 150 km coastline of the Gulf of Gda nsk, genetic diversity is very low and genetic distance is related to the direction of sea currents influenced by the western winds (Minasiewicz et al 2011). Taking the Baltic Coast from Poland to Finland, including the Swedish Islands Gotland and € Oland, on the margin of the distribution range in Northern Europe the genetic diversity between and within populations is very low (Ievina et al 2010).…”

“…Various aspects of E. maritimum biology have been investigated more recently along coasts of the Baltic and the North sea including population trends in Lithuania (Olšauskas 1996;Olšauskas and Urbonienė 2008) and Poland (Łabuz 2007; Żółkoś et al 2007) as well as demography and germination biology in Norway (Curle et al 2007). Biogeography and genetic diversity of E. maritimum was studied recently using molecular markers (Clausing et al 2000;Kadereit and Westberg 2007;Ievina et al 2009Ievina et al , 2010.…”
