This paper is aimed to find out main factors influencing material movement through analyzing its motion equations under the effect of the airflow. Orthogonal experiment was used to research the effect of four parameters on cleaning performance indicators (loss and impurity rate). The results show that the optimal working parameters are as follows: the fan rotation speed is 1400rpm, the wind plate I, II angle are 30° and 15°, and the fin-type chaffer scales is 24.5mm. Under this circumstances, the loss and impurity rate are 0.32% and 0.31%. The Fluent software was applied to simulate the airflow field of cleaning room, the results indicated that the airflow velocity in the back of screen surface is still lower than the front when parameters are optimal, and a return sieve plate was designed. Field experiment results demonstrated that when the installation angle of plate is 30°, the loss rate is 0.20% and the impurity rate is 0.17%.

The thorough investigation of both grain threshing and grain separating processes is a crucial consideration for effective structural design and variable optimization of the tangential flow threshing cylinder and longitudinal axial flow threshing cylinder composite units (TLFC unit) of small and medium-sized (SME) combine harvesters. The objective of this paper was to obtain the structural variables of a TLFC unit by theoretical modeling and experimentation on a tangential flow threshing cylinder unit (TFC unit) and longitudinal axial flow threshing cylinder unit (LFC unit). Threshing and separation equations for five types of threshing teeth (knife bar, trapezoidal tooth, spike tooth, rasp bar, and rectangular bar), were obtained using probability theory. Results demonstrate that the threshing and separation capacity of the knife bar TFC unit was stronger than the other threshing teeth. The length of the LFC unit was divided into four sections, with helical blades on the first section (0-0.17 m), the spike tooth on the second section (0.17-1.48 m), the trapezoidal tooth on the third section (1.48-2.91 m), and the discharge plate on the fourth section (2.91-3.35 m). Test results showed an un-threshed grain rate of 0.243%, un-separated grain rate of 0.346%, and broken grain rate of 0.184%. Evidenced by these results, threshing and separation performance is significantly improved by analyzing and optimizing the structure and variables of a TLFC unit. The results of this research can be used to successfully design the TLFC unit of small and medium-sized (SME) combine harvesters.

Interest in the development of stripper headers is growing owing to the excessive losses of combine harvesters and costs of manually harvesting for chickpeas. The design of a new concept can enhance the mechanized process for chickpea harvesting. A modified stripper platform was designed, in which passive fingers with V-shape slots remove the pods from the anchored plant. The floating platform was accompanied by a reel to complete the harvesting header. Black-box modeling was used to redesign the functional operators of the header followed by an investigation of the system behavior. Physical models of the platform and reel were modified to determine the crucial variables of the header arrangement during field trials. The slot width was fixed at 40 mm, finger length at 40 mm, keyhole diameter at 10 mm and entrance width at 6 mm; the batted reel at peripheral diameter of 700 mm and speed at 50 rpm. A tractormounted experimental harvester was built to evaluate the work quality of the stripper header. The performance of the prototype was tested with respect to losses and results confirmed the efficiency of the modified stripper header for chickpea harvesting. Furthermore, the header with a 1.4 m working width produced the spot work rates of 0.42 ha h -1 . Additional key words: black-box modeling; chickpea harvesting; design; losses; stripper header.
